This painting is a deeper expression of everything portrayed in the first painting of “The Pandemic” collection, “Dissociation”. "Distress" is an emotionally charged painting that reflects the inner turmoil and struggle of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. We are at the point where we have taken in the shock and are now digesting the whole pandemic news. Naturally, nothing sits right, everything wants to flow out. The entire painting is dominated by a massive amount of fluid that appears to be pouring out of people and windows, representing the collective discomfort that has been building up The overall color palette is somber, with shades of blue and gray, creating a sense of heaviness. Floating boats are scattered throughout the painting, representing that nauseous feeling when going on a journey of navigating the uncertain waters. They appear to be suspended in mid-air, as if unsure of their direction or purpose. Despite the chaos and distress, there is a sense of hope and renewal in the painting. The fluid is draining away, towards the bottom left corner of the canvas, as a symbol of the possibility of finding calm and peace and a will to continue on the path to hope.
